Happy Black Girl Day!

32 Comments 07 January 2010

In light of all the frustrating, disheartening and depressing news that so often tarnishes the name and the existance of Black women, I am declaring today a special day. Not just any day, but Happy Black Girl Day! No talk of who doesn’t want us or what we can’t have because we’re Black. Just happy Black woman stuff. Tweet it, blog it, text it, call your friends and tell them all about it. Kiss a Black girl today, love a Black girl today. It’s our day to be HAPPY!

**UPDATE: Happy Black Girl Day is SUCH a lovely success over on the Twitter that it shall now be observed on the 7th of every month! I’d love to have some of my fellow bloggers particpate! Details to come!**

  8. Jade Ali El says:

Hurrray!!! I think about how terribly boring my life would be if I weren't Black. I'm so happy to be a Black Girl, and I'm happy we are appreciated today. Even if we are only by ourselves.

  9. Malachi says:

So you saw the Princess and the Frog and liked it? I still haven't seen it yet!!

Lite Bread- This is a celebration of Black girls, anyone who wants to celebrate us is welcome to play!

Malachi-I haven't seen it yet, but I "met" Princess Tiana at the Carol's Daughter store, LOL.

  13. Confessions of a Church Girl says:

I am happy about Happy Black Girl Day! Spreading the News!

  14. Lite Bread says:

    Ms. Toldja,
Why Thank You, for the inclusion!
Yes! It’s time to Celebrate the unique magnificence of “The Happy Black Girl”!
(I’d wear the t-shirt too, but that might be misunderstood; or be plain weird, lol!)

So, maybe Ms. Toldja, for the guys to join in, we have the requirement of listing out the things we love about you all? Give all you women your due props, huh?
So it isn’t just the girls celebrating themselves (which IS fine in itself), but the guys showing some love too.
    Like it?
Or am I still nuts, lol?

  15. K. Michel says:

Wow, I was going to do something like this for February on my blog… but hey. I love Black girls. I love Black women. So, a Black Girl Day is all good with me.

"So, maybe Ms. Toldja, for the guys to join in, we have the requirement of listing out the things we love about you all? Give all you women your due props, huh?"

As BM, we never needed permission to let these women know how amazing they are…

    1) Creativity

(Black women are impressively creative; it boggles my mind. Who else can take the worst parts of a pig… and make them into the tastiest parts all in the same instance? It's that ingenuity that just makes BW so next level.)

    2) Style

(Black women can make anything "en vogue" even in a society that tries to deny them their grace. Don't believe me? Ask the women who inject their lips and breasts to get a "fuller" look. These are things that BW naturally have, yet are in high demand.)

    3) Beauty

(The phrase, "Black Don't Crack", is true in more ways than one. The beauty of a BW is seemingly timeless. BW just age GRACEFULLY. In fact, it's like… I can't wait to grow old with my future wife because I know she's going to look GOOD!! Hahaha!)

Let me stop here because I can go on all night and I'm starting to get tired. This doesn't even scratch the surface. I WILL say that you are all beautiful and I love you immensely.

  16. IntrospectiveGoddess says:

This is Whats Up! I am on board and I cosign the T-shirt Idea, lets get that crackin!

  20. unequivocal difference says:

Best idea of 2010!! I'm already ready to put a stamp on it! Seven days in and you already have the year locked up.

And please do extend this for every 7th of every month because I'm born on a 7th and this would be the best gift ever!

  21. JahLionessJD says:

    Hello,
Though everyday should be our day, the seventh is a good day. In Ethiopia the 7th of january is Christmas or Gena. it's a big day for prayer, giving food to those who don't have and enjoying yourself. In the starting of a tradition, Happy Black Woman/Girl/Mother Day (Melkam Gena). spread the word

    Jah Blessing

  22. CurvyGurl ♥ says:

Awesome idea! I'm planning my Feb post already :-) .

  23. mysixcents says:

Awesome Idea!!! I will post this date on my own blog every 7th of the month too!! of course I will give the credit to you.

Also loving the T-shirt idea…..don't say anything if I have some of them printed up and for sale at the flea market by the next 7th of the month.

Can't wait til Feb 7th! Got to make some plans to celebrate!

  24. Weez says:

Facebook! You need a fan page! I'm in!

  25. Afro-chan (aka Skinflint) says:

    I will spread the love!

  26. Danita says:

Holla! I’m obviously late to this movement, but LOVIN’ it. On 1/7 I thought I was just enjoying my own “Happy Black Girl Day” with my sister as we celebrated our shared birth date, but thankfully it’s been declared a movement :)

I just found your site via your excellent article in the March issue of Essence. Keep up the marvelous work!
