The humidity of summer is dreadful for my hair. Perfectly styled curls turn to large cotton balls after a few minutes in the sun. The fall offers brief solace, only to be followed by freezing temperatures and the accompanying hair breakage and drying of winter. Enter nuNAAT, a beauty company from Brazil (known for it’s superior hair products) with remedies from the Amazon!

Thick and luscious nuNAAT cream is suitable for use as a daily or deep conditioner and comes in a number of luxurious formulas designed to serve all hair types: Pitanga for thin hair, Buriti for dyed and discolored hair, Aloe Vera for curly/wavy hair, Brazil Nut for dry hair with split ends and Cupuacu for extra dry hair. These products are for use with natural or relaxed hair of varying textures and lengths
When I was contacted by the good folks at KMR Communications with the opportunity to gift a reader with a selection from the nuNAAT line of hair products, I immediately asked that I have the opportunity to try them for myself first. Not out of greed, friends. But because I’m not trying to get blamed for someone losing her hair to the Rio or Copa Hair System of 2009! I got 99 problems, the litigious society can’t be one of them.
After dying, frying and lying my hair to the side all summer, my hair was SUPER dry, so was very eager to try the nuNAAT Cream Cupuacu for Extra Dry Hair and the NAAT Serum for fighting frizz. The Cupuacu cream had a pleasant smell, but wasn’t as fragrant as a lot of other conditioners. I was intially disappointed, until I remembered how many conditioners I have tried that smelled like roses and left my hair feeling like thorns.
The package calls for leaving the conditioner in for 5-10 minutes, but my frizzy hair girls know that you gotta deep condition a bit longer than that. It didn’t take much of the Cream to saturate my entire head, which was a a plus, as I walked around the streets of Bed Stuy for about two hours running errands with conditioner in my hair. When I finally rinsed and dried, my hair was so soft and manageable! My usual 4-5 varying curl patterns had normalized quite a bit and my tresses were smooth to the touch. I used a bit of the NAAT Serum all over and hit my hair with the blow dryer. I was excited to end up with a head of luxurious curls. I was even MORE excited when I found out that nuNAAT products run about $5-8 dollars and are widely available in beauty supplies and salons allover the country.
One lucky TBS reader will get his or her own chance to try a nuNAAT cream of their choosing. All you gotta do is submit a tale of your own hair woe and the most tragic one will be gifted with his or her own full-sized nuNAAT cream conditioner! Send your stories to contest@thebeautifulstruggler.com no later than 11:59PM on Thursday, September 17, 2009. The winning story will be announced on Monday, September 21st. Good luck!

Back in 2005 I had long relaxed hair. I left my gold curling iron plugged in for a too long and burnt a chunk of hair off in the back of my head. At the time I told myself it wasn't visible. A few months later I decided to cut off all my hair into one of those cute short relaxed styles. Even though my hair was short it was still high maintenance. I decided short texlaxed hair that I could wash n go would be less work. After growing my hair out again I decided to natural hair.
O boi…where do I start?
Back in the 6th grade…my mother allowed her beautician (that's what they were called back then) to put a perm on my head (mind you, I had previously had a curl). My hair became very brittle and I had extreme breakage. My hair was so weak that my then 3 year old cousin caught hold of my hair and ripped a bald patch in the back of my head…
Well, let's just say, I was sporting the bald fade long before I knew what an Amber Rose was. Then once my hair begin to grow back, my mother was persuaded by the same beautician to put a curl back on my head because that would grow it out faster *side eye*…
This experience alone has caused me to develop a diversion towards chemicals. From this point I see-sawed between chemicals and the old school press and pull…
As a sophomore in college I threw all caution to the wind, and shaved off my chemically relaxed hair…
I did break down and get a relaxer here and there after wards…
But finally in 1999 I said no more, and I have been naturally beautiful for the past 10 years!
My worst hair woe is actually what inspired me to be natural…
I have always had reddish brown hair. In my Junior year of college I decided I wanted jet black hair so I bought a combo kit. I know you're not supposed to perm and color on the same day but if the kit puts them in the same package it must be ok, right?
WRONG. My hair was mid back length before "the incident" After, it barely reached my shoulders. Where my hair used to be thick and smooth it was now stringy, rough, and frazzled.
Even worse my scalp was so tender I could barely stand to touch or move my hair, much less style it.
Luckily, everyone was rocking the head wraps back then. So I was able to somewhat save face.
In order to revive my hair, I started deep conditioning, protein treatments, and co-washes.
Now 5 years later I am back to mid back NATURAL hair and I will drop whatever I'm doing to educate others on natural hair techniques.
Can you post the exact ingredients for the conditioner you used?
i just got back from living in brazil and, as always, am disappointed with the lack of options we have in the states for black natural hair care products. they have an abundance of products for women with curls, and i wish we'd get on the bandwagon. there is an amazing product that i use from there called Elans. their leave in conditioner works wonders on my hair. needless to say, i shipped myself a year's worth of the stuff before i left to return to the states. but now that i know about this (thanks!) i will totally try it out.
